Teeth grinding (bruxism) is the involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth. It usually occurs during sleep, but some people find themselves experiencing it when they are awake. People develop bruxism due to a few reasons; emotional stress, drug use, having to concentrate hard, and illness. Our clinicians may recommend patients wear a custom-fitted splint (mouthguard) throughout the night or during idle times of the day.
The TMJ is the joint in your lower jaw (mandible) that opens and closes your mouth. It is responsible for the way your teeth bite and fit together. Any long term jaw-related issues can significantly impact the function of these hinge joints. An unhealthy TMJ shares many of the same symptoms as teeth grinding including; earaches, migraines/headaches, muscle stiffness, popping or clicking of the jaw, reduced range of motion, irregular tooth wear and difficulty eating.
